September 2008--Santa Cruz, California, USA.
At the base of Mount Fuji lies an ominous stretch of forest known locally as "The Sea of Trees." Centuries of secrets lie hidden under the mossy earth, where rivers of lava have hardened over to form the cavernous forest floor.  Thousands of people who have entered these woods have never been seen again.  Some simply got lost.  Others went in intending to disappear...

Jukai takes us through the stories two women, whose lives are linked over centuries through their shared quest for answers deep in the sea of treas. Miyu is a farmer's daughter sold into a life of servitude, who flees her master's house in hopes of finding Tohgenkyo-a mythical utopia rumored to be hidden deep in the surrounding woods. Beatrice is an anthropologist, obsessed with the many manifestations of the Black Madonna, who comes to Japan to find the remains of a city referred to in an ancient text as Kuro Kannon no Mura, the city of the Black Bosatsu of Mercy.

Témoin collaborates with Ikuyo Conant, Artistic Director of Watsonville Taiko Group, along with drummers Jordan Zimmerman and Taeko D'Andreo, to create a movement-drumming piece which incorporates Japanese traditional drumming with physical theatre.
